Our Florida Beach Condo: TV Stand Picture Wall

I just realized I never wrapped up our Florida beach condo makeover posts from May. Whoops.

The last thing we worked on after I stripped the wallpaper border in the kitchen and spiffed up the balcony was the picture wall in the living room. I have always loved Mrs. Limestone's TV wall at her shore house and have wanted to create something similar in my own home. I don't have a spot for it at our house but this wall in our condo in Florida was definitely calling out for some love!

See? Not cute - and so boring compared to everything else we have done there. I found some clipart online that I modified and play with to recreate an image I had in my head of what this wall should look like. I printed them on regular paper and slapped them in these frames (from Target).  I would really like to get some chairs to use here in lieu of the extra dining room chairs. They are really not very attractive in here.

On the opposite wall, I further refined my photo wall to include this awesome wood fish Ipurhcaserd at HomeGoods or Marshalls for about $10.  Now if only I could convince Handy Hubby that the leather couch needs to exit.

So those are the updates for now!! Enjoy your last few weeks of summer  (if you have a any left!)

The Ever Evolving Gallery Wall

One of my favorite spaces in our house is the little hall between our kitchen and dining room.  This used to be a space I would walk into and through many times a day without thinking.  Ever since we put in our gallery wall, I love walking through there.  Here's how it looked when I first put it up.

Since then, I've added several pieces that I have either received or found in other parts of the house.

I like my gallery walls to be "crowded" - not leaving the items and pictures much room to breathe.  I want the wall to stand together.  I love the mix of frames on this wall particularly, although there are a few things I'll move as I gather more favorites.

The art now includes some works by Alex (my 3 year old) including the felt piece on the bottom left and the clay ornament hanging under the Eiffel Tower.  He is not yet into art all that much (although he is so proud of what he does do), so I have to encourage him any way I can.

My friends ask me how I hang the pictures.  I generally say "Just hang them. If I end up with an extra hole or two, I hope it's covered by something before Handy Hubby gets home!"

Any gallery wall lovers or haters out there?  Picture hanging tips?

Ignored Space Becomes a Hallway Gallery

There's a short hallway between our dining room and kitchen which I have basically ignored since our renovation in 2009. I have some grander plans for this space but I'm starting small right now until Handy Hubby finishes some other higher priority projects. It's a hallway we use daily on our way to the powder room, hall closet, front door, and dining room. So, it needed some personalization.

I had a pile of various pictures, paintings and other little things piling up in my dining room and basement guest room waiting for new homes somewhere in the house. Unfortunately the magic places weren't appearing, until I looked at this long empty wall.

Seemed like the perfect place for a gallery wall which would also help to de-emphasize the ugly air intake vent and the doorbell box. I had already painted the vent cover but it didn't help very much.

I admit I have a bit of an obsession with gallery walls. I have several pinned on Pinterest which gave me plenty of inspiration. I already have several gallery walls in my house and I love them. We have this one on our stairwell.

This time around though I wanted something a bit more eclectic and homey. Here's where I ended up.

Most definitely a work in progress but I wanted to explain my general plan or lack of plan. I basically, had a lot of stuff and I started by laying it down on the floor of the living room to get a general idea for how I thought it would look hung up. I included a mix of things that I have collected that we love and many of them have special meaning for us. Then I just started hanging each piece individually so the space between each is relatively tight and the frame sizes and types of hangings are mixed up and not all right next to each other.

I still plan to add a couple more two-sided glass frames for masterpieces that the kids create. I also want to add a few favorite family photos which have been lying around the house either unframed or framed but put away to reduce clutter. Long term, I hope it reaches floor to ceiling and we change things out and add more things for as long as we live in this house.

Have you created a gallery wall in your house? If so, post your link below!

House Tour Room-by-Room Link-up Party: Front Entry, Stairwell and Hall

We had a great weekend, including a quick trip to New Jersey for my cousin's wedding. It was a lot of fun hanging out with parents, brother, and cousins for an evening, but then we came right back home yesterday so we could attend an event at Elizabeth's school, a birthday party, and squeeze in some pool time as well. Wow, I'm still tired!  I'm really looking forward to the 4th of July long weekend!

It's Monday so it's house tour day again! This time we're touring your front entries, stairwells and hallways. These spaces are often ignored so I wanted to give them the attention they deserve. After all, you pass these spaces many times per day so it's a great place to display items you love to look at.

We don't have a front entry but one of the best features of our house is our stairwell.  Before we renovated, our stairs were one of the better features of our house. They ran up the back of our living room. We installed a runner to cover their imperfect finish but they still were very fitting for our colonial.

We wanted to keep the stairs where they were or modify them in the renovation process but ultimately our architect convinced us that moving them to a new location opened up so many options for us (including making a useless 4th bedroom into a perfectly sized room).  Thank goodness she was persistent!

Here's how our stairwell looks now...

The stairwell goes up four stories - basement to attic - with no interruptions. My kids often eat a snack sitting on the bottom step. That step is also our time-out seat.

We originally planned to have a short banister to the right of the refrigerator but then our builder asked whether we thought we needed it because we all loved the open look. We did not need it for code purposes since we had the other handrail and it was less than the minimum drop off. We decided to leave it off knowing we could add it later, and we never looked back. Also, one other fun fact - the newel post at the base of the stairs in the picture above is actually our original newel post from our old stairway!

We have this small wall gallery of family pictures started on the first flight of stairs but we hope to extend that up the stairs as the years go on. I found the M at Ross for about $6 a year or two ago. They often have them if you are looking for something similar.

I also love how it's the centerpiece of our house both inside and outside. Here's the view from the driveway which gives you an idea of the height. It almost looks like a tower on the side of our house but it's so pretty in the early evening with all of the lights on.

This door off the driveway is the one we use most frequently now. Our tiny mud area is right inside to the right under the window.

Your turn! Please link up any post about your front entry, stairwell, or a hallway in your house. Did you do something fun? Do you have big renovation plans? Let's hear it (and see it!). Feel free to link up to 3 separate posts.

Growing Up: A Little Girl's Room Evolves

It's a snow day here today!  Can't say I'm particularly happy about it.  I really hate it tomorrow but today the kids will exhaust themselves climbing around in the 8" or so we got.

We went to kindergarten information night on Tuesday night.  It's hard to believe my baby girl is going to be in kindergarten next fall.  It feels like she was just born!  I know... soon we'll be talking about college.  Honestly, I love each new stage of her life more than the last.  One of my main goals with her room is to have it grow with her so she doesn't grow tired of it.  One of the easy ways to keep things updated is to change up the wall decor as she grows.  Changing out her bedding would be another good option but I chose bedding that is not babyish so hopefully we won't need to change that any time soon.  (To read more about her room, click here.)

Elizabeth's room was one of the first room that we finished after the renovation.  We wanted her to have a place to get away from the craziness of settling into our house.  Here's how it looked last spring.

I liked it but I felt the wall decor was definitely lacking.  I was mostly using what we had around.  I love the gallery walls that people are doing - it's a great way to fill a tough space without a huge piece of art.  So, I created a gallery space in Elizabeth's room over her arm chair.

I love this because I feel it can really change as she changes and he interests evolved.  The best part is that it didn't cost a dime!  The small green board with the pink stripes is a magnetic board - so adorable.  I bought it a long time ago but hadn't found the right place for it.  The pink and green frames were left-over from a baby shower I threw years ago.  The "sugar and spice" sign was in my room when I was a child.  My grandmother made the embroidered piece on top and the frame on the right was hers.  She always loved Mary Engelbreit.  I have a second Mary Engelbreit frame to add but I need to find a way to hang on the wall securely.

Over her bed I added a cherry blossom branch decal which is probably very "last year" but I love the effect.  I moved the bird and watermelon print over here as well.  She picked it out and loves it.  I think it feels more special in this location and I definitely wanted one piece over the bed now that we have the cherry blossoms on the opposite wall.

A quick update on the nightstand.  There is no update!  It needs updating and something needs to happen but I haven't figured out what exactly, but I plan to do something soon.  Really soon.
You may have noticed the change in the light fixture on the nightstand.  I think it needs to be punched up but this was in her nursery as a baby and has lived on there in Alex's but the floral shade was not cutting it in there and definitely was not going to work in his big boy room which we'll be putting together next year... or sooner since he jumped out of his crib last weekend!

Check back tomorrow for some fun and easy updates to Alex's nursery.
