(This picture is actually from a couple of weeks ago before the skylight was installed... more on that later this week.)
But, what do with the ceiling. All of the posts, beams, and trim will definitely be painted to match the sandtone trim color (matched to our Andersen windows) on the rest of our house (a slightly grayish tan). But the ceiling seems like an opportunity to do something different. The wood ceiling is nice though so I am considering doing a semi-transparent stain but it's unclear whether it should be light, like a white wash or pickled, or dark similar to our HardiPlank siding. If we paint it, do we paint it the same as the rest of the room, or paint it a pale blue like so many southern ceilings (google it and you'll see...).
Before you jump to a decision, here are some inspiration photos for you to think on...

Hmmm.... After looking through these (and loads of others on Pinterest and Houzz), I can eliminate the blue (although I love blue porch ceilings and I would consider using it on my front porch at some point)... but I do like both he pickled-whitewash and the straight painted ceiling. Not sure I want it to be dark although it would certainly highlight the wood detailing against he stony trim.
Thoughts?!! Help!!

I am 100% for a blue ceiling!
ReplyDeleteWe have a dark stained ceiling on our screened in porch. It was that way when we bought the house. I keep thinking of painting it (and the rest of the inside of the porch that is wood now) a white color. Our porch also has some trees surrounding it, so I feel that it is quite dark.
ReplyDeleteThat wood is pretty. I'd pickle it for the light color but to keep the beauty of that grain visible.
I think a blue or even lavender would make the porch seem like a peaceful and calm haven. Have you looked at milk paint?
ReplyDeleteThey are all so beautiful! I don't envy you this decision, but my personal favorite is photo #5. I like how you can still see the various tones in the wood and the lightly painted trim really sets it off.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!

I like the blue. That's what our porch ceiling was before and they just painted the new one today and we picked blue again. I still love it! :) Katy
ReplyDeleteI am in love with all those porches but my vote would be for white or something very light. Best of luck deciding!

I love your blog and your home. You have done such a thoughtful job remodeling and keeping the integrity of your home's design.
ReplyDeleteAs for the porch ceiling, I think that blue porch ceilings need a true white trim color for a nice contrast. Since you are keeping your sandstone trim color then painting the ceiling the same sandstone would be pretty and still bright enough to reflect light back into the porch and your living room. I wouldn't stain the ceiling unless you are having a beadboard ceiling installed.
It is looking great! Can't wait to see the finished product.

I love all of your inspiration pictures ... it make me wish I had a covered porch. :)
ReplyDeleteAs for your decision, my humble opinion is that you go with a light stain/white wash. That will give you the opportunity to lighten the space and see what you think. If you go with white/paint, you can't go back to a stain later (at least not very easily), whereas if you stain it first, it might be a little easier to paint it later.
I think you've narrowed it down to a few good choices, so I'm sure whatever you decide will look great!
Go with the paint. It will be bright and cheery. Before I painted mine Plantation Beige and threw a rice mat on the floor, it felt cave-like IMHO.
